RLS may be caused by Morton’s Toe, says Panama City podiatrist

Dr. Dudley Morton 1935 book, The Human Foot

Dr. Dudley Morton 1935 book, The Human Foot

A  foot care specialist,  podiatrist, foot doctor of Panama City Fl, Dr. Burton S. Schuler, says that the common foot problem known as the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) may be an overlooked cause of Restless Legs Syndrome. Dr. Schuler is the author of the new book about the Morton’s Toe, called Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts In The Foot which tells you how to get the proper  foot care that you need

Dr Schuler says:

“I ask all of my new patients if they have any problems sleeping because of any discomfort of their legs. Many of them tell me that they do have nightly leg cramps that disturb their sleep. Some also tell me that they are being treated for Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Night cramps are abnormal contractions of the leg muscles that often do awaken patients from a deep sleep. The exact cause of these night cramps or leg is not known; however everything from poor circulation, dehydration, muscle overexertion, imbalance of electrolytes, to drug reactions, has been proposed, but we know it can lead to improper foot care”

Schuler goes on to say

“According to the National Institutes of Health, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them for relief. Patients who have them describe these sensations as burning, creeping, tugging, or like insects crawling inside the legs. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful. There is no known cause for this condition, but it does run in families in up to half of the people with RLS. It is a fair assumption that Restless Legs Syndrome and nightly leg cramps are related in some fashion

“Dr. Dudley J. Morton did think that a Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) could be the cause of these legs cramps, and I feel it may be a missed cause of Restless Legs Syndrome. In his 1935 book, The Human Foot, Dr. Morton, discussed how an abnormality of the first metatarsal bone, Morton’s Toe, (Long Second Toe) can cause spasms and strains in the leg muscles that can then cause disturbances in sleep. If your feet are overworked because of problems at the first metatarsal bone, you can have tired feet, fallen arches, and weak ankles, and because of that, it is not a big leap to see how your leg muscles could also become strained and exhausted and cause night cramps.”

Dr. Schuler then states

“I am not saying that Morton’s Toe is a cause of Restless Legs Syndrome, there is no formal evidence to support this. But what I do know is that many patient’s who have came to see me with pre diagnosed Restless Legs Syndrome (by another physician) also had Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) . And, when I treated their Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) , many of these patients’ Restless Legs Syndrome and or night cramps did improve and or totally disappear.”

Finally Dr. Burton S. Schuler, says

“This is called antidotal medicine and many doctors will not believe that a Morton’s Toe can be a cause of RLS. But I don’t care because after 35 years of treating feet I truly believe that Morton’s Toe is being missed daily by a lot of physicians. Dr. Dudley J. Morton, was one smart guy, he knew all about foot care”

More About The Morton’s Toe, and Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts In The Foot

Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts in the Foot, tells the story of two famous physicians and their association with the common, but painful, medical condition known as the Morton’s Toe. Millions of people suffer everyday with chronic aches and pains from head to toe and don’t know why. Many of them have lost all hope, and believe they will have to live with these pains for the rest of their lives. The book is significant because for the first time in seventy years the public is made aware of the importance of the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) , and the fact that could be the real unidentified reason (the “medical missing link”) for their unending torments. This book will also show how Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) can also cause fibromyalgia, arthritis, sleep disturbances (RLS), temporomandibular joint pain, and numerous other problems through out the body The good news is that all of these problems can be treated with a simple pad that costs about two to three dollars. The bad news is that in spite of the fact that two of the most famous doctors of the twentieth century were behind the Morton’s Toe, most modern day physicians are not aware of Morton’s Toe or of it ability of causing pain all over the body. This book took six years to research and write, but Dr. Schuler feels it was worth it because it should be able to help many people get out of pain. The book is disturbed national by the Cardinal Publishing Group. It will be translated to Greek this Year.

In the 1920’s and 1930″s Dr. Dudley J. Morton of Yale Medical School and Columbia Medical School wrote that a problem with the 1st metatarsal bone, known as a Morton’s Toe could be the reason for most foot problems. Dr. Janet Travell, White House physician to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and Professor Emeritus of Medicine at George Washington University took this concept further by writing and teaching that the Morton’s Toe could cause pain all over your body. She wrote and taught for four decades that a Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) could cause back, hip, knee, leg foot and ankles problems. She felt that the Morton’s Toe, was so important that at the age of 89 she made a video tape to teach other physicians about how to recognize it and how to treat it.
